Mother Nature’s inspiration isn’t just for show in the lobby her presence can be felt in all 425 of the hotel’s rooms and suites, which feature driftwood walls, recycled pine headboards, hemp blend-filled mattresses, 100 percent organic cotton sheets, clothes hangers made from recycled paper, and even your very own glass terrarium to bring the outdoors in.
Some of the largest rooms in South Beach are found at this 426-room resort. Executed beautifully by design firm Meyer Davis, they immediately put you in Zen mode with rustic-edged wooden tables, gold coral sea fans printed on the walls, and reclaimed Colorado beetle kill pine wood, naturally dyed a cornflower blue due to the insidious bugs. Beds are plush and pretty, on raised platforms begging to be used, while the bathrooms are equally inviting and oversized with Calacatta marble soaking tubs, rainfall showers with peek-a-boo windows and trough sinks. While not every room has a balcony, many do, and an ocean-facing room is far superior to the city view. My room was stunning, and at 650 square feet unexpectedly large. The layout is notable, too there are no walls that separate the sleeping area from the living area, and only a glass wall separates the shower from the bedroom, yet each area’s purpose is clear and distinct. The wraparound couch looked right out the balcony door. Waking up to the sounds, and smells, of the ocean, is not a feeling I will soon forget.
The hotel offers multiple dining venues ranging from the high-end Habitat to a healthy grab-and-go café in the lobby and a poolside Vegan restaurant by California chef Matthew Kenney. Breakfast. lunch and dinner is served at Habitat, helmed by popular local chef Jose Mendin, who specializes in small plates with an emphasis on fresh seafood.
