Mandarin Oriental Hotel

An experience to remeber

Mandarin Oriental Hotel

Located along the Jumeirah coastline, with a beautiful sea view, the elegant Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Mandarin Oriental Jumeira is ideal for those who want to enjoy beautiful beach views while still being within easy reach of Dubai’s top tourist attractions.

The area is known for prime stretches of beach and popular, unlicensed lunch spots. Four Seasons Dubai and Bulgari Dubai also occupy this neighborhood, and there are two compact malls: Mercato and Town Centre Jumeirah. Airport transfers should take less than 20 minutes, and the attractions Downtown are just a 15-minute drive away. Closer still, City Walk is home to shops and restaurants, liberally coated in street art, and Green Planet, an indoor vertical rainforest with some interesting four-legged inhabitants.

The door staff stands out in Mandarin Oriental-blue fedoras and frock coats. Another indelible impression is made by the interior fragrance, a beautiful blend of woods, mandarin, and lily of the valley. The scent complements the lobby’s unusual centerpiece, the Forest of Lights – two parallel rows of trees cast in bronze, tipped with leaf-shaped bulbs. Beyond the lobby’s glass back wall, the rows continue outdoors toward the beach with lines of real palms. The effect is dazzling.

Service is impeccable throughout the hotel. In addition to five pools, the spa has separate men’s and women’s facilities, with whirlpools, saunas, and steam rooms, and instead of standard post-treatment relaxation beds, there are individual wigwam-like pods with comfy seating and fluffy blankets. Don’t let the frustratingly vague “experience” descriptions on the menu deter you, the world-class therapists are worth visiting. The fitness center offers beach-based classes and the region’s first Outrace frame rigged with fitness gadgets, from swings and ladders to ropes and punch bags.

Rooms

Natura Bissé toiletries speak to the decadence of the accommodation, featuring marble bathrooms, rain showers, bronze lampstands, and sumptuous orange or teal upholstery popping against a pearl-hued backdrop. Most of the 256 rooms and suites have balconies or terraces, aimed at either the Arabian Gulf or Dubai’s city skyline. Large televisions and tea- and coffee-making facilities add convenience, but control panels for lighting and curtains do not; some guesswork is required to find the desired illuminations and it’s literally an open-and-shut case with the curtains as they can’t be partially drawn. Decadent and refined, the rooms are as you’d expect from a Mandarin Oriental property. The decor blends earthy tones with touches of tangerine, teal, and gold, and only the finest materials (Statuario marble and Persian travertine) along with quality linens, the design approach seamless.

Food and Drink

It’s hard to resist the delicious ice cream at The Bay – even during breakfast, when it’s incongruously part of the international buffet, alongside charcuterie meats in clamp holders and double-barrelled French cheeses. This bright, beachside deli-restaurant also serves good coffee, lunch, and dinner.

Acclaimed chef Jose Avillez’s menus at Tasca feature dishes from his Michelin-starred Portuguese restaurants, including creamy, crunchy avocado tempura. Low ceilings, pale woods, innovative cocktails, and ambient lighting create a cozy setting by night. By day, the terrace’s infinity pool is equally welcoming.

In the lobby, next to the Mandarin Cake Shop and Noor lounge, Netsu serves warayaki-style dinners cooked on a straw fire grill that produces intensely smoky flavors. Given its global approach to food and beverage, each one of the six F&B establishments has its own appeal, none more so than Tascas, the rooftop eatery by Portuguese culinary superstar Jose Alvarez. You can’t go past the ceviche-style Algarve prawns and bluefin tuna tartare, and if you book early evening you will enjoy your meal with the glistening city skyline as your backdrop. Japanese steakhouse Netsu by Ross Shonhan is notable too, its warakari cuisine using straw fire cooking delivers some of the best Wagyu you’ll taste. The open kitchen provides diners a front-row seat to the cooking action, while the artisanal sake and vast Japanese whiskey selection are equally impressive. Noor Lounge is the go-to for afternoon tea and the nearby Mandarin Cake Shop is packed with some of the most delicious cakes and sweets.

Plunge into the Mandarin Oriental Jumeira,

With its undying love of all things grand and Instagrammable, Dubai takes its poolside views rather seriously. Here, infinity pools overlook rose-gold deserts or azure waters hugged by white sand beaches, while others have dizzying views of skyscrapers and man-made islands.  Whether you want to gaze at Arabian oryxes among sand dunes or a dazzling cityscape that looks like it’s right out of a film set in the future while sipping cocktails.

On the sixth floor is the hotel’s adults-only rooftop infinity pool along with Tasca by José Avillez, a sleek contemporary Portuguese restaurant, and lounge. The picture-perfect infinity pool is a serene spot from which to appreciate the myriad shades of blue in the Arabian Sea while sipping on a refreshing craft cocktail or feasting on Portuguese seafood specialties.

For families or those who’d rather swim a few steps away from the beach, the same striking views of the ocean can be admired from the palm-tree-flanked swimming pool overlooking the beach. You can stay on a day bed or in a cabana, sip on chilled cocktails or fresh juices, and nibble on salads while enjoying the upbeat music. Upgrade your experience at the private pool and beach cabanas that come with complimentary fruit platters, refreshments, and sorbets; a nonalcoholic minibar; sofa and lounge seating, and a butler.
