The Sphinx is an upscale restaurant located in the center of Fira. Opened in 1991 at a magnificent spot, the restaurant is a restored mansion with a spacious terrace that offers spectacular panoramas of the caldera and the port of Fira. There are two dining areas built in traditional style and decorated with fine pieces of artwork created by the Santorinian artist Christopher Asimis, as well as three verandas that overlook the volcano and the caldera.
The Sphinx is tastefully done up with antiques, sculptures and ceramic pieces of local artists, and the unique views of the caldera are accentuated by the stunning sunsets that the island is famous for. The cuisine is international and the chef and owner of Sphinx, George Psychas, has chosen a fine selection of dishes from the Mediterranean cuisine. The menu starts from cold to hot appetizers and moves on to soup, salads, light fish or meat entrees. Extra virgin Cretan olive oil adds a rich Mediterranean flavor to the dishes. Fresh pasta and tasty seafood have popularized the restaurant among the locals as well as tourists. There is an exhaustive selection (nearly 150) of exceptional wines, both Greek and European to complement your dinner at Sphinx, and Santorinian wines have been painstakingly chosen to provide a superior dining experience. A private verandah and a dining room at the Sphinx is set aside for wedding receptions and private celebrations.
